The
stressors you face as a physician are unique. On a daily basis you may have to deal
with intense time demands and pressures, problems that don't have solutions,
life and death issues, fear of malpractice litigation, and piles of paperwork
from managed care.
"Physicians, as a group, tend to be perfectionists, rigid in their thinking,
compulsive, and skeptical. We have a need for interpersonal dominance and
control. Compulsiveness may drive us to overwork as a mechanism to cope with
feelings of guilt and not doing enough. We are inclined to deny our own personal
problems and weaknesses. Burnout is pervasive among physicians, but, for many,
the condition is stigmatized and the rule is you just don't talk about it."
